How To Balance Your Business, Job & Life |Chapter 3:My Company, Log 1|Colluide

Topic: Work-Life Balance

While in the midst of this 9 month project to build my social network, I was also equally involved
with graduate school and working part time. No matter how busy my life was, I promised myself that I would not abandon my idea. It takes obsessive people to build a business; generally, obsessive people get a bad reputation by society. Unfortunately, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is the commonly viewed epitome of obsessive behavior in society’s view today. Ignorance aside, I consider this type of obsession as extreme commitment and refusing to give up or be fickle. People nowadays are sometimes indecisive, inconsistent, and have a 5 second attention span. This is only my opinion and not a form of judgement. Nonetheless,I believe that there are supposed to be different types of people, with that being said everyone cannot be entrepreneurs. Only an obsessive personality combined with ideas and goals will breed a successful entrepreneur.

In addition to having a product built by someone else, the anticipation of reaching the completion can be nerve wracking. The product could not get done fast enough but in the meantime I had to stay busy. Fortunately for me, I had more school and work that I could even manage. Every entrepreneur has to learn to manage their life and startup at some point. I had to make a special effort to plan and make a schedule for every aspect of my life.

As simple as it sounds a schedule can be next to impossible to make for a graduate student to follow, but in a few weeks it got easier as my schedule became more repetitive. Graduate school and work were hectic; I had to prioritize by handling one task at a time. Luckily for me, I worked at my school so it was easy for me to schedule work and my afternoon/night classes on the same days. I like to advise college students to schedule their subject study time for each class either a day before or after the actual class. This helps the student to be able to retain the information more and keep it fresh. I also encourage them to put in extra effort on the tough subjects on the weekend. I would try to revise my subjects each weekday except for Friday. Friday was my personal Sabbath (day of rest), I always used Sunday to get most of my studies done. Wednesdays were typically my update day with my developer, this was the day he was free and when I got home early. Between this study time and school, I found time for my startup passion. My contributions mostly involved designing website pages and functions to ensure the website matched my overall mission.

Another important aspect of having a good school, work and startup balance is making some down time for yourself. Despite being past the undergraduate college stage, I was still a college student and I needed to make the best of it. I joined groups, hung out with friends, and played sports. Granted, I tried to minimize going out as much as possible to meet my budget, but at least once a month was my philosophy. Trying to engage in as many learning opportunities and meeting new people was my goal as well. I really wanted to do and learn as much as possible for graduate school, especially since I believed it would be useful for building my startup.
